Seasonal Anime Podcast - Mid Spring Discussion

Hey, guys! Another monthly animu podcast with your usual members, Flawfinder (Standing on my Neck), Landon (Mecha-Guignol) and Slashe (The Nihon Review). We have returning guests, Bobduh (Wrong Every Time and who will actually become a regular recurring participant), Emperor J (LowerMidTable) and Shinmaru and Scamp (TheCartDriver).

We blab our opinions over the currently airing Spring season anime (and I actually open my mouth more than two minutes this time). We talk about how Stardust Crusaders hasn't been as awesome as anticipated, there's some good debate between Sidonia and Attack on Titan, we discuss our favorite Tonari no Seki-kun episodes, there's Mahouka bashing and etc.

Enjoy!

  3. Jojo season three will become repetitive eventually which in a way kind of negates that they don't draw out the fights a bit. Though its still enjoyable the manga's length was really un-neccesary. Polnareff is a great character but jotaro really can't fill the boots of his predecessor Joseph. I don't have anything new to say about mushishi. Sidonia's characterization and awful pacing /comedy kind of take away from it as does the cg but I like the setting and fight scenes still. But as you know I really really hated attack on titan, I agree with the guy said that sidonia made itself more immersive and tense than titan.

  4. Hey hey now =) I've been reading akuma no riddle and enjoying it still for the joyful nonsense that it is. I really wanted to continue chaika I really did but they are ruining the manga/light novel with the pacing. Kawaiisou had a weak comedic start but has since consistently been pretty funny to me, its nothing special however. I am ashamed to say I have not watched tonari much =< Wixoss is really now the final fall of Okada at this point, its far too heavyhanded , moe , the card game they play is boring and the series and characters are so forced.

I mean I’d much rather black bullet and no game no life…hell even machine doll was better than this…at least there is some so bad its funny aspect.

It does need more and better action however.
Sorry for wall text but I wanted to be constructive in my criticism of this, it’s a polarizing show and I don’t want to piss off haters or fanboys. Was I fair on this or should I give it until episode 13?

The incest angle is some of the worst I’ve seen in an anime series in a long time, usually it just annoys me or I ignore it, here it’s uncomfortable, insipid. I did find myself falling asleep in some parts of this series, it is rather boring and often, vacuous at others, but its really a problem when a show just makes me feel depressed watching it and when a lack of enjoyment can lead to that level of feeling towards something that’s a pretty bad sign

It does have the benefit of being adapted by madhouse, it moved quicker and was less of a slog to get through than the manga, an action scene in episode 7 might be encouraging. However the characters currently at least are very bland, the dialogue is quite dry, the technobabble leading me to switch off at points

Well I went ahead and watched the 8 available episodes for Mahouka after reading the manga’s first volume. The storyline here is at present sporadically interesting, perhaps there maybe something in the leads family background worth exploring, this can be said of the terrorism element also."

  6. Scamp mentioning the east and west thing made me think of something. Maybe the confusion of east and west at the beginning was meant to signify that the entire show takes place on opposite day. If that were the case, and everything they said was the opposite of what they meant, then this show could actually be really good.

  7. I enjoyed Appropriant a lot from the last podcast. Think we'll be seeing him around sometime again?

Also Sidonia is better than Titan but I'm not particularly fond of either. I'm with Bob that in both, the characters are pretty shit, but the clinical tone in Sidonia is working better for me too than what Titan had. The CG makes it feel a bit... unhuman? Sort of detached. I just like the atmosphere more. And yes the harem is pretty awful. Titan was pretty much only good at action, but it only knew how to do one kind of note the whole way through. When it wasn't doing action, the weak writing was killing it for me.

    1. We'll invite Appropriant again when we feel like it. As you can see from the first comment on this thing, he was not available whilst we recorded this, so he couldn't have joined even if we asked him. But yeah, he's a good member.
